This brain teaser asks for the first time after a given hour when the hour and minute hands of an analog clock line up exactly. The candidate must think about how the two hands move continuously, starting from different initial positions, and reason about when they next coincide. Solving it leans heavily on relative motion, linear functions of time, and careful handling of angular speeds. Strong candidates translate the description into positions that both depend on time, measure the initial offset between the hands, and then equate those positions with the correct rate difference. What it tests
Problems involving the alignment or overlap of moving objects with different constant speeds are governed by relative motion. The key is to express each object's position as a function of time, accounting for both their starting positions and their rates of movement. The alignment occurs when the faster object has 'caught up' the initial gap, which is the difference in their starting positions, at a rate equal to the difference in their speeds. This leads to a linear equation in time: the time to alignment is the initial gap divided by the relative speed. This principle applies broadly to any scenario where two (or more) entities move at constant but different rates and must coincide in position, regardless of the context (clocks, runners, gears, etc.), because the difference in their positions changes at a constant rate equal to their speed difference.
