In three-dimensional geometry problems involving layered objects, the key is to distinguish between the total volume and the volume of the 'core' that is not exposed to the surface. For any $n \times n \times n$ cube, the mini-cubes with at least one face exposed are those not fully surrounded by other cubes on all sides. The inner, unexposed region forms a smaller cube whose side length is reduced by two (removing one layer from each end), so its volume is $(n-2)^3$. Subtracting this from the total gives the count of surface-exposed mini-cubes: $n^3 - (n-2)^3$. This pattern holds because only the mini-cubes on the outermost layers touch the surface, and the rest are shielded from all faces.
