This brain teaser presents a classic hat puzzle with a twist: one of the participants is blind. Three people each wear a hat drawn from a known pool of colored hats, and only the sighted players can see others' hats, not their own. Each person also knows that everyone else understands the overall setup. The first two players publicly admit they cannot deduce their own hat color, and the third, despite being unable to see anything, uses these statements to confidently identify his own hat color. The puzzle asks you to unpack how that is possible and what chain of logic allows a blind participant to out-reason the sighted ones.

The question leans heavily on logical inference under common knowledge, reasoning about others' possible observations, and what their admitted uncertainty rules out. It tests whether you can track multiple hypothetical configurations and eliminate them using only verbal statements as new information. Interviewers watch for clear conditional reasoning, the ability to articulate others' knowledge states, and comfort with iterative elimination. Strong answers explain not only the final deduction, but why each earlier "I don't know" statement is informative.

What it tests

This problem class is governed by the principle of reasoning under common knowledge and iterative elimination. When agents share not only facts about the system (such as the total count of each hat color) but also the knowledge that everyone else knows these facts, each statement made publicly updates the information set for all. The key is that each person's declaration is itself a piece of evidence, narrowing the possible configurations. This recursive structure means that what one agent cannot deduce becomes a clue for the next, as the space of possible worlds shrinks with each public statement. The principle holds because each agent's uncertainty or certainty is itself a logical constraint, and the chain of reasoning is built from the interplay between what is seen and what is said.
