This brain teaser is about translating a word problem into simple work rates and combining them. It looks trivial on the surface but forces you to see through the story and recognize a standard rate problem hidden in plain language, a common pattern in quant prep and quant interviews. The twist is really about units, not about the characters.
It trains your ability to reason about rates, proportionality, and basic algebra under mild time pressure. You practice converting times into comparable rates, aggregating them correctly, and then converting back. This is core quantitative thinking: turning narrative setups into clean mathematical objects, checking consistency, and manipulating them accurately.
This matters in quant interviews because many trading, research, and risk questions reduce to combining flows, speeds, intensities, or arrival rates. Interviewers use such toys to probe your comfort with modeling real-time systems and your numerical fluency.
What it tests
Whenever multiple agents (people, machines, etc.) work together on a task, their individual rates of completion add linearly, provided their efforts are independent and additive. The key is to express each agent's work rate in terms of 'tasks per unit time' rather than 'time per task,' because rates are additive while times are not. This principle holds because if one agent completes $a$ tasks per minute and another $b$ tasks per minute, together they complete $(a+b)$ tasks per minute—mirroring how flows or speeds add in parallel. The total time to complete one task is then the reciprocal of the combined rate. This structure applies broadly to any scenario where independent contributors work simultaneously on a divisible task.
